Workshop and intervention

A floating platform in the shape of a sea monster (in Spanish Monstruo marino) and outcome of a workshop with residents of the informal housing settlement, La Perla, just beyond the walls of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. The sea monster is a vessel for exploring the Atlantic Ocean, which continously threatens the La Perla community with its strong tidal currents. It is also metaphor for harnessing fear, a feeling endured by the inhabitants of this marginalised, vulernable and precarious community.

This work explores the notion of spatial and mental borders in the context of La Perla as a marginalised barrio of San Juan, and developed an event that involves sending a ‘vessel and sea monster’ out into the Atlantic ocean.
